Research
Cancer research at Shaukat Khanum Memorial Hospital and Research Centre (SKMCH&RC) is focused on finding the best way possible to treat and manage patients in developing countries, such as Pakistan. The Abdul Hafeez Cancer Research Wing, founded in , houses the Basic Sciences Research Laboratory, Clinical Research Office and Cancer Registry and Clinical Data Management Departments; collectively, these three sections form the centre of research studies at SKMCH&RC.
Over 4,000 new cancer patients are registered annually. Statistics suggest that the top three malignancies across all age groups and both sexes combined were breast cancer, leukaemia, and lip and oral cavity cancer. While breast cancer, the most frequently seen cancer in our hospital, forms the basis of much of our clinical research effort, we are also currently conducting research in cervical cancer, stomach cancer, liver cancer, leukaemia and lymphoma.
In the future, our expanding knowledge of cancer will have a major impact on our ability to predict an individual’s level of risk of developing cancer, our ability to detect and diagnose cancer early and to select treatments that are most likely to be effective. We aim to create a bridge between the laboratory and clinic through translational studies to improve diagnosis, management and prognosis for our patients.
