SKMCH&RC: An Inspiration since Childhood
My father, Commander Shaukat Jawaid, always spoke highly about Imran Khan’s honesty and integrity—first as a cricketer, then as a politician and finally as Prime Minister. My parents had told me about the Shaukat Khanum Memorial Cancer Hospital when I was a child, and the dedication Imran Khan took to establish a non-profit charity hospital for cancer patients in the name of his mother, Shaukat Khanum.
Creating Hope with Loss
When my father passed away suddenly in December 2018, I was struck with shock about this irreplaceable loss. During his life, he consistently gave to those who were not able to fulfill the basic human necessities of food, housing, education and health care. I heard about creating a sadaqa-e-jariya and I knew I wanted to honour him with an ongoing charity that was close to his heart. I looked around at a few options but decided on establishing him as a Founding Donor for the second phase of development for Shaukat Khanum Memorial Cancer Hospital and Research Centre in Peshawar. As he grew up in Peshawar, I know it will be a place close to his heart. Moreover, I know that my donation is going to a truly worthy cause, with staff that will uphold Imran Khan’s integrity and vision. I know that there is no way to bring back a loved one; we must honour their life instead. I also know that this donation is for a cause and organization my father cared deeply about. I look forward to the development of phase three of SKMCH&RC, Peshawar and the ongoing success of Shaukat Khanum Memorial Cancer Hospital’s initiatives in providing cancer treatment for all—regardless of race, religion and ability to pay. Thank you for carrying out the wishes of so many.
