Cancer Statistics

Running under the Shaukat Khanum Memorial Trust (SKMT), the Shaukat Khanum Memorial Cancer Hospital and Research Centre, Pakistan, has a computerised cancer registry that is designed for the collection, maintenance, and analysis of information on patients registered at the hospital. The registry has been functioning since the hospital in Lahore opened its doors in December 1994. The registry aggregates cancer statistics by gender, age, topography, and morphology. The international guidelines are applied to classify the diseases (both cancerous and non-cancerous).

The patients in this report were registered at the SKMT-affiliated centers, and their information was entered into the hospital information system’s computerised cancer registry

Results

A total of 137,005 neoplasms, of which 127,772 were malignant and 9,233 were benign, were reported at the SKMT centres during the past 29 years. Male and female distributions were 46.9% and 53.1%, respectively. Approximately 90.3% of tumors were registered among adults, compared to 9.7% in children. Cancers of the breast, gastrointestinal (GI) tract, and lip/oral cavity were leading across all age groups, both sexes combined; among adult females, cancers of the breast, reproductive system, and lip/oral cavity; among adult males, cancers of the GI tract, prostate, and lip/oral cavity; and in children, Hodgkin lymphoma, acute lymphoblastic leukaemia, and non-Hodgkin lymphoma were common.

A total of 8,657 neoplasms, of which 7,921 were malignant and 736 were benign, were added to the registry database in 2023. Of the 7,921 cases, 7,760 (98.0%) were analytic, while 161 (2.0%) were non-analytic, according to the Facility Oncology Revised Data Standards (2016). Analytical cases are usually included in treatment and survival analyses, but non-analytical cases are often excluded.
