Zakat is obligatory for adult, sane Muslims if their wealth remains above the Nisab threshold for a full lunar year. Zakat is still obligatory if the wealth in possession exceeds Nisab at the beginning and end of the Zakat year, even if the total wealth drops below Nisab at any point during the Zakat year.
The value of Nisab is equivalent to 52.5 tola (612.36 grams) of silver OR 7.5 tola (87.48 grams) of gold, if only gold is available among the Zakat eligible assets.

Shaukat Khanum Memorial Trust ensures that all Zakat is disbursed within the year of collection and is used in accordance with Islamic principles. Zakat management at SKMT has been independently certified as being fully Shariah- compliant.
At Shaukat Khanum Hospitals, after clinical evaluation, cancer patients needing financial support undergo a one-time financial assessment by our Financial Support Services to ascertain the extent of support they require. Based on their financial situation, the majority of patients receive financial support, and up to 100% support may be provided. Our Zakat fund is maintained separately from the general donation fund. The implementation of this entire system, to ensure with precision that every rupee is utilised in line with the eligibility of each patient every time a service is provided during the course of treatment, is made possible through a very sophisticated, custom-built Hospital Information System. We recognise Zakat disbursement as a very serious matter and make every effort to ensure that it is disbursed appropriately, and only to deserving and Zakat-eligible cancer patients.
