The Paediatric Oncology Department at SKMCH&RC, Peshawar offers treatment to children with all stages of Hodgkin lymphoma from the time they are first diagnosed to the later stages of their illness. Treatment is also offered for major childhood cancers including leukemia from case-to-case basis. These patients are given the most up-to-date treatment following international protocols. SKMCH&RC, Peshawar provides Long term follow up clinic for children who have completed their treatment. Most of the departmental faculty has been trained from well-reputed international hospitals.
A child with cancer needs very special attention: good medical care and constant nurturing in addition to unconditional support for his or her family as well. At Shaukat Khanum Memorial Cancer Hospital and Research Centre, Peshawar, our team of consultant paediatric oncologists, hospitalists, senior instructors, medical officers, nurses and administrative staff work together to provide state of the art, comprehensive and compassionate care.
All patients at SKMCH&RC are assessed in a multidisciplinary conference where a team of paediatric oncologists, radiation oncologists, paediatric surgeons, pathologists and radiologists work together to prepare a personalized treatment plan for each individual patient. Patients are then treated in accordance with disease-specific internationally-accepted management guidelines. The aim is not only to provide cancer treatment but also to improve the lives of those who receive it.
The Department of Paediatric Oncology at SKMCH&RC, Peshawar currently has 4 dedicated Inpatient beds with plans to expand it further. Intensive Care Unit (ICU) facility is also available for children requiring such care.
SKMCH&RC, Peshawar provides a 24/7 emergency care by a dedicated emergency team.
The department has a 2-bed day unit with plan to expand it further, where outpatient chemotherapy is provided.
Outpatient clinics for cancer patients are held regularly. There is a formal long term follow up clinic where children, who are long term survivors of cancers are followed up with a view not only to oversee the late toxicities of cancer treatment, but also to help these individuals.
This outpatient clinic provides services for administration of parenteral antibiotics for oncology patients with average 10-20 visits per day. Those needing growth factors (GCSF), elective blood transfusions and blood thinners e.g. Enoxaparin are also accommodated in the same facility.
Departmental academic activity includes daily patient ward rounds, weekly grand rounds and multi-disciplinary meetings with the paediatric oncology team in Lahore.
