Cancer Registry and Clinical Data Management
The Cancer Registry and Clinical Data Management (CRCDM) section has pioneered cancer registration in Pakistan by setting up and maintaining a hospital-based cancer registry. The Registry has been functioning since 1994, when the hospital became operational. The Registry is a member of the International Association of Cancer Registries in Lyon, France.
The CDCRM staff is responsible for coding and generating summaries of cancer and non-cancer cases. Since January 2004, the Registry has been coding cancer cases using the International Classification of Diseases for Oncology, Third Edition (ICD-O-3). The staff generates summaries using the International Classification of Diseases, Tenth Revision, Clinical Modification (ICD-10-CM). Each year, the CRCDM provides extensive cancer statistics by gender and age group.
The CRCDM staff is also actively involved in running a population-based cancer registry, the Punjab Cancer Registry, which is registered under the Societies Registration Act of Pakistan (XXI of 1860) and in facilitating population-level cancer registration in Khyber Pakhtunkhwa (KPK). Over the years, the Registry has provided cancer estimates for various districts of Punjab and the province of KPK, with the latest paper reporting the cancer statistics in KPK (https://doi.org/10.1186/s12889-023-16686-5).
The CRCDM staff also facilitates requests from students, researchers, and clinicians to conduct research studies at SKMCH&RC. These studies can be viewed on PubMed, a web-based database of medical research publications.
