Shaukat Khanum Memorial Cancer Hospital and Research Centre (SKMCH&RC) is the story of success of the collective will of our people and affirmation of some of the greatest positives of our society. In line with its mission, Shaukat Khanum Memorial Cancer Hospital and Research Centre continues to strive to provide top quality diagnostic and treatment facilities for cancer patients irrespective of their ability to pay.
After the Punjab, patients from the Khyber Pakhtunkhwa (KPK) province form the largest group of patients seen at the Hospital, with nearly 40,000 patients from the NWFP / KPK having been registered at SKMCH&RC, Lahore, since 1994. In an effort to bring care closer to the patient, the second Shaukat Khanum Memorial Cancer Hospital and Research Centre was decided to be built in Peshawar. Recognizing the credibility of the Shaukat Khanum Memorial Trust, the then provincial government awarded 50 kanals of land in Peshawar for the construction of the Hospital. The second SKMCH&RC in Peshawar witnessed an overwhelming support of the people, both from within Pakistan and abroad. Fakhir Afridi, a seven year old cancer patient, along with Mr. Imran Khan, Chairman, Board of Governors of Shaukat Khanum Memorial Trust, inaugurated the Hospital on December 29, 2015.
The Hospital has been constructed and equipped at a total cost of Rs. 4 billion. It’s an eight level structure with two basements, a ground and five upper floors. The covered area of the building is even larger than the Hospital in Lahore.
The clinical services continue to be upgraded at SKMCH&RC Peshawar with the Chemotherapy Bay becoming fully functional at its original dedicated place i.e. the first floor of the Hospital’s building with effect from October 2016. In conjunction with the commencement of chemotherapy, inpatient, ICU and emergency services, the outpatient department (OPD) has also scaled up its services gradually. The OPD has recorded the highest level of patient activity in the SKMCH&RC Peshawar’s maiden operational year. Presently OPD consulting clinics are being held for Medical Oncology, Pediatric Oncology, Internal Medicine including Palliative Care, and Ancillary Health Services including Nutritionist and Psychologist clinics. Pathology and Radiology services have also continued to witness steady increase. As part of Phase II, the Hospital’s Management aims to commence Radiation Oncology services by the year 2018 for which relevant construction works are in progress in full swing.
If we all do a little, we can all do a lot.
